Development of major ports project to be handed over to private sector

New Delhi, Dec (EPC News): The Union government is planning to award 17 Major Port developmental projects to private entities under the National Maritime Development Programme (NMDP), the Shipping Secretary, K. Mohandas.

The 17 projects, once completed, are expected to enhance cargo handling capacity by 183.5 million tonnes a year, he stated.

NMDP aims to increase the capacity of Major Ports by 410 million tonnes per annum. he 17 projects may involve an estimated investment of Rs62,000 crore.

"We are ready to provide support to all private sector players to set up ports and other maritime development projects," he stressed.

Designed as a public-private partnership (PPP) project, NMDP was launched in 2005 to implement 276 projects by March 2012.

Under NMDP, the government also plans to set up a mega container terminal in Chennai, with an estimated cost of Rs 3,686 crore, which is expected to increase the Port’s capacity by 48 million tonnes a year.

NMDP has also calculated an investment of Rs1,136.63 crore in Kandla Port to enhance its berthing and related facilities.
